I'm still alive... still alive. I'll post some pictures up tomorrow. Right now the stuff you'll see soon are part of this sketchbook assignment for school, so they're not exactly the best of quality like my other ones, but darn good enough to pass for a good grade for a sketchbook. I'll tell you when I based it off of something, created it myself, or direct copying.

As for the Shana pic... I'll get to it, I swear I will. I just need to shade it. Chisaikame, I'll get around commenting your stuff.

oh.. my original account was restored... :D

gmoney-kun! it's chisaikame!... my account got corrupted the last time MT crashed.. that i have to create a new one again!.. >.< anyway, just adding you back.. :D

hey wat up? i'm not restricted any more. yea. so...i just wanted to check on you since we don't really talk with each other. later ^_^

Quote by g-moneyVery nice attention to the details of the clothing - all the folds and creases are done well with a balance of white highlight and outright shadow. Demo, I think the shading on her face needs to be a more solid tone based on ref... manga shading tend to use 1 color tones for shading, but I like to use natural shading.

are you talking about the how to draw manga magazine books by prof japanese mangakas? i love that series.... but no, i don't think i got to that part.. thanks for sharing with it me though... will keep it in mind.. ^_^' i think what you are saying is that i should have made the shades on her face just one continuous line and didn't suffer any breaks.. >_> basically, with shading... (this is so weird - i never refered to it as shading... when people say i like your shading.. i'm like wha-?... all i know is that 'there should be' lines there/this is how it should look like.... i let instinct take over... of course with the aid of the ref, too. ^_^'

Also, the head seems to be verticalized and needs to widen a little in comparision to the reference. (I made that word up "verticalized"; I have artistic license, hehe.) I believe her arm also needs to be shorter, but it's negligible. You know, this is the first time I compared your pic to the ref, but for all its minor faults it's still a pretty darn good drawing.

i think i know about the 'verticalized part'.. ^_^' well, two factors... if you have flat screen monitor the image most often would stretch it... therefore giving it an elongated appearance... >_> unlike if you're using say - a widescreen laptop it wouldn't look so much like that.. :) just simple oservations... ^_^' ...the other one is that it really takes alot of concentration and discipline to 'nail' the head/faces angles... i think the more you copy the more you get exposed in a gazillion possibilities and therefore, losen the 'stifness' and be more flexible with your copying skills and hopefully adapt to it too.. :) thanks very much g-money son... always glad to know that it passes on your tastes! :)

ki o tsukete! XD

Well, you know how in real life things gradually fade out and that everything is not just solid colors? Manga use different tones of black to achieve the shadowing effect, but I for one don't personally like it and rather have it more gradual and life-like. What I meant was that there are artists like us out there that when they copy something, they also copy the shading style: the smooth solid tones. When I saw your picture, I saw that you tried to imitate the solid tone, but upon closer inspection, the face shadow was composed of lines and not a smooth solid tone, which was somewhat successful. A friend of mine as does anime drawings and inherited the "manga-style" shading, defined as smooth, solid, and different tones of black since he uses pencil like me - he mastered it, but it's not my style ya know?

As of now, I'm in high school, so doing pictures like these is a hobby that I try to do with my spare time, and Shakugan no Shana is definitely worth the try. Here's a link for direct download: http://www.mrpc.us/fansub.htm - it has the latest episodes, but the first 10 are in a donor area for only $5. Just bittorrent or IRC the rest.

aha.. i see.. well that's achievable... i think... i have done that a few times.. if i make the lines more compressed and close together etc... and smudge it lightly it will get to look more 'solid'.. but i've always liked the 'raw' effect of using just lines... cos it's what makes it so different from the ref... cos personally if i try to copy 'everything' down to the last detail... it wouldn't be any different from a photocopy.... with lines.. you can play around and introduce your technique in converting the reference 'photo' into just lines and shades... which is cool.. and overall leave out your technique/individuality with the doujin.. XP

thanks for the link! :)

Quote by g-moneyThe subtle transition from shadowing with pencil to color isn't easy, ne? My skill with the color pencil ain't bad either, but I just don't do it because manga is all done in black and white. The pluses and minuses of color pencils comes with the variety of colors... adds life and color and variety, but the balance of the amount of colors and the right shading levels can prove to be the problem. The other guys up above mentioned what needed to be mentioned.

yeah... so far... i'm having a knack with color pencils... yeah.. i tried to match the tints i was using with the black and white of the pencil... it's quite fun actually... >.< i think i should have sharpened the color leads more though... to give the cross hatch effect more justice... otoh, i was feeling rather terribly while drawing the doujin... it quite shows on how sickly the whole picture came out... thank for commenting btw! :D

As a fellow artist myself, I try not to point out the obvious and I wil tell you what you did well and what you need to improve on - the artist must improve constantly as they say. It's always good to have the perspective from an artist, especially from the same field ya know? As for me being genki... no, not really. My SAT scores were even lower than the first time I took it. It was higher than 2000, but my goal has not been attained as of yet, so one more try in October because I'm taking a whole slew of SAT II's.

On the other note, I thank all the people who added my pictures to their fav's but I'm a lazy person - I really don't feel like saying "Thanks for the fav" a dozen times, but believe me, I do thank mina-san who looks at stuff and think it's worth a slot in their favorites. Shakugan no Shana is coming soon... I swear I will finish it within Febuary, even if it means staying up late till 2:00AM. (A lot of anime downloading has taking up my time besides school and clubs.)

wow.. so many faves! maido arigatou! *hugs* XD

ohayo g-money-san! XD

ogenki desuka? XD

Quote by g-moneyWhat gets me is not the coloring or shading but rather the finer composition - the lines are smoother, thinner than before, and her eyes and hair are highly defined.

domo arigatou!.. i'm very glad i get a reaction like that.. cos, it's always a pleasure to communicate with art... :) to me, that's how beauty should be.. fine and delicate.. so i always aim at that.. :D ikimasho! OX

Seeing how you have color incorporated background and otherwise, you should do a full color picture, that'll be interesting. As for the other catfight picture, they said everything I needed to say, except that your use of background shading gives your pictures a whole other perspective, something that hit me now.

i've to say your comments are one of my favorites and i always read them more than twice! XP thanks very much for the support! :D Gambatte g-money-kun! XD

sincerely,
chisai :)

Quote by g-moneyNice job, but he kinda looks like a woman. I realize that you bank your skills on soft shading - works fine for simple pictures like this, for it gives this picture a smoother effect. However, keep in mind that the artist is versatile and should be able to manipulate any media, and shadowing to its fullest. I have yet to see a picture with dramatic shadowing yet. (I'm not criticizing here, but just noting point a point about your style, hehe)

thanks for the advice!

Quote by g-moneydamn, you have a lot of time on your hands. In any case, it's a nice picture where color just adds to the dramaticness of the picture... I have watched Neon Genesis Evangelion and they story as well impressed me. Good shading as always.

hello there! thanks very much!.. always glad to have your comments! XD
